Mom & Pop

A floppy hat.  A handful of postcards just for fun.  Maybe the best hot dog you've ever had.  And a cup of coffee.  Nothing really beats a good general store, especially when you stumble on them while on a road trip.  But look around.  Is there a little shop you've been meaning to go into that's just around the corner from your house?  Well, today is the day because it is National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day.

The image above is of the Broome Street General Store in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.  A friend and old co-worker of mine opened it and named it after a street we once worked on.  I'll take those bags!  And a latte.  Oh, and what are those cute shirts?

I wish I was in New Orleans today.  To close the annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, a Stella Shouting Contest is held in Jackson Square.  Not to mention the weather seems perfect for strolling around the French Quarter.

Saturday Night Pasta

This doesn't have a name because we made it up as we went tonight.  Maybe I'll call it Saturday Night Pasta (we really know how to party).  I used a "recipe" I found on-line for the shrimp and then decided to add it and asparagus to linguine.  It is a perfect meal for spring and summer, if you have guests over because it's good served hot, warm, or cold, and is good paired with a salad and white wine.

1 lb of shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 stick of butter
3 lemons
1 packet of dry Italian seasonings (found in the salad dressing aisle)
1 bunch of asparagus
1 box of linguine
to taste:  olive oil, (Kosher) salt & pepper, grated Parmesan, hot red pepper flakes

Preheat oven to 350.

Snap off ends of asparagus at their natural breaking point.  Put them in a baking dish, drizzle olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Bring big pot of water to a boil.  Add pasta, then drain once done.

In a small pan, melt the stick of butter.  Then pour butter into a separate baking dish.  Layer 2 sliced lemons on top of butter.  Then layer fresh shrimp on top of lemons slices.

Dust shrimp with a once-over sprinkling of Italian seasoning.  It's very salty so I only used maybe a quarter of the packet.

I put the asparagus and the shrimp into the oven at the same time (separate baking dishes) and baked them for 15 minutes.  It came out perfectly but depending on size and your oven, you may need to keep the asparagus in a bit longer.  When the asparagus comes out, cut them into bite-sized pieces.

In a large bowl, pour in pasta, asparagus, and the shrimp with lemon/butter sauce.  You'll need to fish out the lemon slices.  Gently mix until the pasta is evenly coated.  At this point you may need to add a little olive oil and squeeze a little more lemon.  Salt and pepper, Parmesan to taste.  And I added the red pepper flakes to mine.

So easy and delicious.  Enjoy!

Five & Ten

If you live in Dallas and have yet to stop by Forty Five Ten's pop-up shop, Five & Ten, then now is the time...

Sailor Knot

"Oh Mine Gosh" as Stella used to say.  These sailor knot necklaces are only $25 on Etsy.  I'm ordering one pronto!  Only...which color?  I'm thinking tangerine.  I really want all three!

Spring Is Here

Let's be honest.  Spring has been here.  Our forecast has 80 degree days up ahead.  The Farmer's Almanac has predicted a mild summer, but I'm wondering about that.  It is amazing, though, to start working in the garden early and watching the hydrangea leaves burst out of their stems.  This year, we are going to try growing carrots in a container...

I plan on wearing my floppy hat (that looks similar to the one below) a lot while out in the yard.  I picked it up for $1 at Target.  They have a lot of cute ones right now.  I may have lucked out with my Plain Jane $1 one but there are others for not a lot.

We got a friend for Stella's pet fish, Blackie.  She's a cute snail named Goldie and Stella gets super excited when she emerges from her shell.

And with the new season comes a new look for the Treillage website.
I always love perusing this site for inspiration...

Art Imitating Art

Whoa...I am seeing double.
Here is the cover of the new D Home Magazine...

Looks familiar, right?
It looks just like one of my favorite Nate Berkus rooms...

Yellow Doors

Hey, Susie...I found another cute yellow door at Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar on Henderson.  After watching a marathon yesterday of Man vs. Food, I should not be thinking about food.  But really, I want to visit Lisa Garza's new place more for the decor!

What's For Dinner

Pinterest is chalk-full of ideas for dinner and I can't be more thankful for this particular go-to category.  I've tried some, which weren't a success, such as the one where you use croutons instead of breading for Chicken Parmesan.  The croutons soak up all the sauce and leaves it very dry and honestly, we make a great one already not using breading at all.  But I have found some recipes that I just love that are now in rotation.  Here are two...

First, Chicken Parmesan Meatloaf.  My husband must have had a bad childhood experience with meatloaf because he does not like it at all.  So when I found this healthier, Italian version, I knew I had found gold.  You can use either ground chicken or turkey.  He's now converted.

Second, is Greek Chicken, which, if my husband would let me, I could easily make once a week.  It's that good and that easy.  I pair it with Alexia oven fries, which soaks up all the lemony goodness and because I'm a lazy weekday chef.

Have you found any on there that are now your favs?
What did we do before Pinterest?!

hard to believe spring does not start until March 20.

Stella actually asked me to take this picture.

Have a good week! xo

Coat Pocket

My posts have been pretty random in nature lately - and sporadic.  I know.  But my mind is full and somewhere else (I still love you!  We haven't broken up!).  However, I did want to stop in to share this little tid-bit I saw on Tumblr.  It reminded me of a friend's Facebook status that made me smile:  "I just found a cocktail sword in my coat pocket".
